Canadian History Ehx

On 9/11, the United States closed its airspace worried about further attacks. That closed airspace meant hundreds of planes and thousands of passengers had to find a new destination.

Among them were 38 planes and 6,000 passengers who landed in the small Newfoundland community of Gander.

Their story has become one of the happier stories from that dark day.

That crisis was averted through thanks to the hard work of people like Lester B. Pearson through the creation of the UN Peacekeepers. For his efforts, Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize.

For almost 50 years, Canada and Denmark were at war over a tiny island in the Arctic. Hans Island was only one kilometre wide, with nothing on it, but it was an important spot along the border when it came to access to surrounding resources.

Over the space of eight months in 1942, an 2,700 kilometres of highway was built from Dawson Creek, BC to Alaska. It was an incredible project that took the international cooperation of Canada and the United States.
