- In this episode of Healthy Her, host Amelia Phillips sits down with Dr Tina Peers to unpack three conditions with surprisingly similar symptoms: allergies, histamine intolerance and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).
For Amelia, it started with itchy eyes in spring and a stuffy nose within minutes of drinking white wine. Could those reactions have something in common? And what about flushing, headaches, digestive trouble or heart palpitations that seem to come out of nowhere?
Amelia and Tina explore how to make sense of overlapping symptoms, what to look for when they flare, and why some women notice them for the first time in perimenopause. They discuss the possible relationship between estrogen and histamine, whether HRT might change symptoms, and what to bring to your GP if you keep having reactions you can’t explain.
In this episode, they cover:
How seasonal allergies, histamine intolerance and MCAS differ, even when the symptoms overlap
What the timing of a flare can tell you, and where testing may help
Why symptoms can become more noticeable in your 40s and 50s, and how fluctuating hormones might play a role
What to consider if your symptoms change after starting HRT
How management differs for hay fever, suspected histamine intolerance and MCAS
When recurring flare-ups are worth investigating and how to prepare for that first appointment

About the guest:
Dr Tina Peers has spent more than four decades working across general practice, reproductive health and menopause care in the UK. She began her career as a GP and went on to become a consultant in contraception and reproductive health. She developed a specialist focus on menopause, worked in menopause care at Chelsea and Westminster, and founded The Menopause Consultancy, where she serves as clinical lead.
Her work expanded into histamine intolerance and mast cell disorders, and she established a dedicated clinic in 2019. As Long COVID emerged, she began exploring how symptoms reported by some patients overlapped with those she had seen in people with mast cell disorders. In June 2021, she organised and introduced the two-day Treating Long COVID conference. Her career spans reproductive medicine, specialist menopause care and clinical education, bringing a midlife women’s health perspective to the discussion of histamine and mast cells.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. - In this Mini Motivation episode, host Amelia Phillips is joined by women’s health GP Dr Ginni Mansberg to unpack one of the most confusing topics in perimenopause: contraception.
If you’ve finished having babies and are heading into your 40s or 50s, you might be wondering whether you still need contraception, which option is best, and whether your current contraception could actually be affecting your perimenopause symptoms.
From the pill and Mirena to implants and non-hormonal options, Dr Ginni explains how to choose the right contraception for this stage of life. We explore whether hormonal contraception can mask the signs of perimenopause, which options might help manage heavy periods, hot flushes and mood changes, and when HRT might be a better choice.
Plus, we tackle the big question: When can you safely stop using contraception, especially if your periods have disappeared?
A practical, reassuring conversation to help you make informed decisions about contraception during perimenopause.
