The San Diego Padres dropped their fourth straight game Wednesday night, falling 3-2 to the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
Walker Buehler delivered exactly what the Padres needed, allowing just one run over six strong innings while striking out six. He shut down Bryce Harper, struck out Kyle Schwarber twice, and continued his dominance of Trea Turner, who remains winless against him in their career matchups.
The Padres finally ended Cristopher Sánchez’s historic scoreless innings streak, becoming the first team to break through after more than 50 consecutive scoreless innings from the Phillies ace. Ty France doubled and Jackson Merrill delivered the game-tying RBI in the seventh.
Unfortunately for San Diego, Jason Adam surrendered back-to-back home runs to J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber moments later, flipping the game and ultimately deciding the outcome.
The Padres nearly stole it back in the eighth. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Miguel Andujar sparked a rally, Gavin Sheets walked with the bases loaded, Xander Bogaerts was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and Manny Machado came to the plate representing the biggest moment of the night. But the Padres could only score once and left the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Now San Diego has lost eight of its last nine games and will try to avoid the sweep Thursday afternoon.
