The Padres’ late push wasn’t enough as they fall 3-2 to the Giants in San Francisco to open the series.
After being shut down most of the night by 25-year-old Trevor McDonald — who went 7 innings, allowed just 1 run on 2 hits, and struck out 8 — the Padres finally showed life in the 9th inning. Ramon Laureano crushed a 447-foot home run to left-center to cut the deficit to one and snap a brutal stretch of 18 consecutive batters retired.
But with momentum in their favor, the Padres couldn’t finish it. Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out for the third time on the night, and Manny Machado followed with a strikeout to end the game, leaving the tying run stranded and sealing the loss.
Jackson Merrill provided the early offense with a 436-foot solo homer in the first inning — the Padres’ first 1st-inning home run of the entire season, making them the last team in MLB to accomplish it.
Luis Arraez was everywhere for the Giants, delivering two doubles at the plate and flashing elite defense with FOUR highlight plays, including a barehanded gem in the 9th inning that helped shut the door.
Randy Vásquez was solid but not dominant, allowing 3 runs over 5.2 innings, including an early home run to Casey Schmitt that helped set the tone.
The Giants, coming off a six-game losing streak, leaned on strong pitching and defense to bounce back and take Game 1.
Padres now look to respond in Game 2.
