    23/10/2026 | 2 mins.
Candles were lit across the country at 8 o'clock last night, as independent MP Helen Haines remains in hospital after having both her legs amputated.
The movement - which was shared widely on social media - invited people to light a candle as a gesture of community peace and solidarity.
Ms Haines suffered critical injuries in an incident on Monday that police allege was a deliberate attack carried out by 43-year-old Brendan Nugent.
He appeared in court earlier this week and was remanded in custody, with a committal mention hearing scheduled for February.

Visiting the scene of the attack, President Macron said people had been targeted for their skin colour or religion.
A suspect was arrested near the town of Trappes.
The Israeli Prime Minister has threatened retaliatory attacks across the occupied West Bank after Palestinian gunmen killed two IDF soldiers.
The shooting occurred at a checkpoint in the city of Hebron.
The Israeli military has already begun demolishing Palestinian homes in retaliation and security forces have imposed a cordon around the city, as Israel prepares to lock down the entire occupied territory.
The escalation comes as Israelis prepare to head to the polls.
Meghan Markle has revealed she was informed by police eight years ago - shortly after her wedding to Prince Harry - that there were "disturbing" allegations relating to her father.
Her statement comes after Thomas Markle Junior alleged that he found thousands of child sex abuse images at his fathers former home in the Philippines.
A police taskforce in the Philippines is now investigating.
Thomas Markle Senior has denied the allegations, describing them as "sick lies".

Could a vaccine stop melanoma deaths?

    23/10/2026 | 2 mins.
A personalised mRNA vaccine plus an immunotherapy drug cut the risk of death or melanoma returning by 42 per cent compared with the drug alone, a trial led by Professor Georgina Long has found.
Each vaccine is designed from the patient's own tumour to help their immune system recognise it, and was given to patients who had melanoma surgically removed but were at risk of it returning.
Experts caution the treatment is intended for advanced stage melanoma patients.

Why are hosts angry with new Airbnb rules?

    22/10/2026 | 4 mins.
Guests will find leaving an Airbnb rental is soon more like checking out of a hotel.
The company is moving to ban hosts from asking to them to do check out chores, like stripping the beds or washing dishes.
The changes will come into effect from November 20.
Hosts are not happy, they're warning it could mean higher cleaning fees, higher prices - or even having listings pulled from the site.
