  • 44. Raranga: weaving ancestral thread with Ahi Nyx
In this episode, we are joined by the powerful and poetic Ahi Nyx (Te Atiawa, Ngāti Raukawa, Mōriori), a takatāpui kairaranga (weaver) based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland). Ahi is a living vessel of mātauranga Māori who brings raranga back into our homes, our bodies, our communities — and into the healing of our identity. Raranga, the sacred art of Māori weaving, is more than a craft — it is a portal to remember who we are. Together, we enter Te Whare Pora, the spiritual house of weaving, and explore how raranga reconnects us to ancestral memory, gender fluidity, and the reclamation of our cultural birthrights. Ahi speaks into the complexities of tikanga, when it can be broken and when it must be upheld. We talk about how weaving can be both a personal and collective healing ritual, especially for takatāpui and those carrying intergenerational grief or disconnection from their whakapapa (lingiege). This kōrero unravels what it means to protect our mana, to be a koha not a hōhā, and to stand strong in our truths even in the face of adversity.  Ahi's wānanga are a reclamation. Her presence is a protest. Her weaving is her karakia (prayer). Whether you're Māori or tauiwi (foreigner), takatāpui or tāne (male), wahine (female) or non-binary — this episode will leave you inspired to pick up the threads of your own story, and start weaving them home. What we cover: What is raranga and why it's more than weaving Te Whare Pora and the wairua (spirit) of creation Working with manu (birds) & who can work with their feathers Closed practices, cultural protocols, and breaking tikanga (protocols) Weaving as identity healing for takatāpui and Māori The truth about Māori shoes (yes, we had them!) Gender roles in weaving — and how they’re evolving How to protect your energy and sovereignty as a creator Holding sacred space for all identities at marae wānanga (workshops) Standing strong in our truths in the face of adversity The Cacao AmbassadorIs offering Āio listeners %15 off your next cacao order Head over to - https://www.thecacaoambassador.com/ Use code: AIO15 SOCIALS: AHI NYX Instagram | @ahi.nyxWebsite | www.ahiraranga.com ĀIO: A ROAD TO PEACE  Instagram | @aio.thepodcast  Tik Tok | @aio.thepodcastWebsite | www.aiothepodcast.com  TARIKURA KAPEA Instagram | @tarikura_ RESOURCES:Somatic Dance Training Mentioned in Intro Sarsha Hope www.sarshahope.com/

  • 41. Atua Wāhine | Māori Goddesses with Tarikura Kapea
Today, we are exploring the vast and mystical world of Atua Wāhine with host Tarikura Kapea. Atua Wāhine are Māori Goddesses, Deities, and Guardians of Aotearoa, New Zealand. These tales have been passed down from generation to generation fostering the people of this land: weaving the sacred, te ao wairua (the spirit realm) and the feminine current that moves through us all. This episode is a remembering, a reclaiming of our devotion to the Great Goddess. Rooted in ancestral wisdom, Tarikura shares the Māori creation story of Ranginui (the great celestial father) and Papatuanuku (the great terrestrial mother). We explore Hineahuone, the woman made of clay, and Hine Tītama, the Dawn Maiden. Through this story, we begin to understand the Māori worldview and its connection with te ao wairua, the spirit world. We then uncover Elemental Atua Wāhine, Goddesses that personify and weave closely with the four elements: wai (water), whenua (earth), ahi (fire), and hau (air). We will explore their whakapapa (lineage), their stories, and key symbols and themes that can teach us so much about how we show up in our feminine nature. The first chapter of this episode sets the context for this kaupapa (topic). We will look at the history of Māori healing modalities in Aotearoa, New Zealand, the suppression of Atua Wāhine, and how reclaiming these stories can empower ourselves, our whānau, and our communities. We will also explore how the witch wound has impacted the global feminine collective and the Earth-wide suppression of the Great Goddess. Reclaiming these stories can whakamana (uplift) our mauri (life force), help us create a strong connection to our tuakiri ahurea (cultural identity) and cultivate a world view that is rooted in indigenous wisdom. What We Cover: Brief history of Māori healing modalities in Aotearoa, New Zealand Understanding the suppression of Atua Wāhine The importance of wrapping sacredness around this kaupapa (topic) How the witch wound affects the global feminine collective consciousness Earth-wide suppression of the Great GoddessThe Māori creation story Hine Ahu One (the first woman made of clay) Hine Tītama (the Dawn Maiden) Hine-nui-te-pō (the Goddess and Guardian of the spirit world) Elemental Atua Wāhine, four Goddesses that weave closely with the four elements.
