This week, we are putting The Love Hypothesis under the microscope.
Coming to Prime Video from director Claire Scanlon and writer Sarah Rothschild, the film brings Ali Hazelwood’s massive 2021 BookTok phenomenon (which famously originated as viral Star Wars fanfiction) off the page and onto the screen.
The Love Hypothesis follows Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart), a brilliant, introverted Stanford Ph.D. candidate racing to find an early detection tool for pancreatic cancer. When her loyal best friend, Anh, refuses to pursue a mutual crush out of misplaced "girl code" guilt, Olive takes desperate measures to prove she's completely moved on. In a blind panic, she grabs the first man she sees in the hallway and kisses him.
That man turns out to be Dr. Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman)—the department’s most infamously harsh, intimidating professor. To solve both of their problems (Olive needs to keep up the charade for her friend, and Adam needs to trick the university into thinking he’s settled so they don't pull his grant money), the two enter into a formal, highly regimented fake-dating agreement. Naturally, their strictly scientific experiment in fake chemistry soon starts yielding some very real, undeniable results.

Plus, I share why that chaotic trailer completely misrepresents the core story, a hilarious piece of set trivia involving a real witch's curse, and why midnight margaritas will forever be iconic.
