He is on the Ping advisory staff and did some really cool research on how the high launch, high spin shot is produced. When I saw that video a few years ago I was amazed at what Derek can do with a wedge which is what makes him so special as he is still a fine player himself. In this conversation we get into everything short game including his framework for assessing whether to use the ground or hit the ball first on your shots around the green to the different pieces that are necessary. We also discuss some of his work with a few of his players and some of the common mistakes that amateurs make around the greens. Finally we cover a few of his favorite drills and how to practice your short game and much more including some personal growth tips and how he stays sharp everyday.
