This White House is a graveyard for grand strategies

正文：Vice-President J.D. Vance loves big ideas, or at least the idea of big ideas. Unlike President Donald Trump, he reads books and even writes his own, and he talks, authentically, like a diploma-carrying member of the elite they both ostentatiously disdain. He aligns himself with the“post-liberal right”, a term so highfalutin one struggles to imagine Mr Trump using it. Mr Vance serves as the chief emissary between the Trump White House and the intellectual “New Right”, the agglomeration of pointy-heads, Silicon Valley potentates and podcasters with big ideas of their own for saving Western civilisation, as Mr Vance, apocalyptically, likes to describe his mission.

正文：Garland Pollard was 11 in 1976, the year the United States celebrated its 200th birthday, and was living in Virginia Beach with his parents. "We were a Nixon family, " Mr. Pollard said. "I remember all the dinner party talk about Watergate. There were race riots at that time. It was pretty feisty — there were arguments at the dinner table." Yet as Mr. Pollard, 60, wrote in an editorial last summer in Boca Beacon, the Florida newspaper he edits, in that bicentennial year "there was a wave of patriotism that came seemingly out of nowhere.”

标题：Which Iran is America dealing with?

With talks set to resume，rivalries in the Iranian leadership could stymie a truce

正文：The past couple of days in the Middle East have been characterised by the now-familiar whiplash. On April 17th POTUS announced the Strait of Hormuz had opened to traffic. Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, confirmed as much. The same day outlets linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) criticised Mr. Araghchi for failing to mention the conditions of the opening. The next day a military spokesman said the strait was closed again; several vessels came under fire as they tried to sail through. POTUS mocked the move to reblock the passage, reminding the world that America’s own blockade already ensured it remained closed to Iranian ships. Yet on April 19th he said an American delegation would return to Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, for more talks with the Iranians, and repeated threats to bomb Iran’s civilian infrastructure unless negotiations succeeded.
