He is the Founder and former Executive Director of the Jacob Burns Film Center, a non-profit film and education center located in Pleasantville, NY. Stephen is the Director and Producer of Disturbing the Peace. He is also an Executive Producer of Fantastic Fungi, Planetary, Backyard Wilderness and a Producer of I’m Carolyn Parker, Enlistment Days, and Presenting Princess Shaw. He has also directed Stories of Transformation, which is a series of short films documenting the healing potential of psychedelic medicines.He is the author of The Age of the Image: Redefining Literacy in a World of Screens, published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux – foreword by Martin Scorsese.Stephen lives in the Hudson Valley with his partner Marcina, their dog Osa, and the flora, fauna and fungi they share this corner of the planet with.Marcina Hale LMFT grew up in Ashtabula Ohio, an adventurous tomboy who loved to climb trees, bike, swim, play sports and ponder life. She studied psychology at Ohio University, Media at Long Island University and Systems Therapy (Marriage and Family) at Fairfield University. She is enamored with the mystery of life and loves to play with what is possible.Marcina Hale LMFT is a therapist and filmmaker who is trained in many modalities from different traditions and appreciates the collective wisdom of cultures. She is a License Marriage and Family therapist certified by CIIS, in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies & Research and MAPS in Facilitation and Education. She is a facilitator of workshops internationally and across the US and has had the honor of co-creating with many amazing people especially the team at Reconsider.She is an Executive Producer of Fantastic Fungi, Producer of Disturbing the Peace and is a facilitator for Reconsider workshop experiences, which have been given in the U.S. and internationally. He had a super successful business career, but now he wants to take America on the EducationSuperHighway. Evan Marwell is the Founder and CEO of EducationSuperHighway, the leading non-profit focused on closing the digital divide in America’s most unconnected communities. In eight years, EducationSuperHighway closed the digital divide in America’s K-12 schools – connecting nearly 47 million students in 99.7% of America’s classrooms to high-speed broadband. To accomplish this, Evan secured commitments from 85 governors from all 50 states to upgrade their schools for the 21st century and $2.5 billion per year of federal funding to make these commitments a reality. A recipient of the San Francisco Chronicle’s Visionary of the Year award and a serial entrepreneur, Evan launched companies over the last 25 years in the telecom, software, and hedge fund industries. Evan is an honors graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School, board chair of myAgro, a board member at Direct Relief and Recidiviz, and a co-founder of Ignite! Today on Move The Needle, Rob talks with Todd Williams, a man who made a lot of money on Wall Street, but also acted on his passion for public education. Highly committed to public education, Todd is the founding Chairman and CEO of The Commit Partnership, the nation’s largest educational collective impact organization with over 200 institutions (including 15 school districts and eight higher-ed institutions educating over 790,000 students) supported by a dedicated backbone staff of ~60 employees. Together the Partnership and its backbone staff are collectively focused on improving post-secondary completion and economic mobility levels across the Dallas County region as well as the state of Texas. Todd also served for eight years as the Education Policy Advisor to former Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings.Todd is a senior trustee and former board chair for Austin College, a liberal arts college in Sherman, Texas. With his wife Abby, Todd was the founding chair for six years of the regional advisory board for Teach for America in Dallas/Ft. Worth, and together in 2007 they also helped establish the Uplift Williams Preparatory School, a K-12 free tuition public charter school operated by Uplift Education that educates over 1,500 primarily Hispanic children living in limited income homes in northwest Dallas.Todd was appointed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott in 2020 to serve on (i) the Texas Permanent School Fund Corporation (responsible for overseeing the investment of the state’s ~$50 billion endowment fund supporting Texas’ K-12 public education system); (ii) the year-long 2018 Texas Commission on Public School Finance (where he chaired its Outcomes Committee which ultimately produced 35 recommendations that served as the basis for Texas’ landmark HB3 legislation which equitably invested $11.5 billion in the state’s public K-12 education system in 2019) and (iii) the 2021 Texas Commission on Community College Funding, which recommended the strategic investment of ~$650 million of new biennial state funding to reward targeted outcomes and increase accessibility for the state’s economically and academically disadvantaged students.Todd is the former Chair of the Citizen Budget Review Commission for Dallas ISD ($1.7 billion budget educating ~155,000 students) and the former Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees for Uplift Education, a public charter school management organization serving over 20,000 students across the D/FW area. He is also the former chairman of both the Real Estate Finance and Investment Center (located at the University of Texas) and the Real Estate Council of Dallas, the city’s largest real estate organization.Prior to dedicating his efforts full time as a volunteer to public education, Todd served as a partner and global co-head of Goldman Sachs’ real estate private equity investment area, retiring in 2010 following a 20-year career with the firm in their New York, Los Angeles and Dallas offices.     This is Move The Needle with Rob Kaplan, where we talk to people who lead, innovate and inspire. What's it like to have taken over a major American airline just ten days before 9/11? Today on Move The Needle, Rob talks to Doug Parker, a longtime airline leader, about that and how the industry changed after that. Doug Parker retired as CEO of American Airlines in March 2022 after more than 35 years in the airline industry, including 20 years as CEO. He was named CEO of American following the merger of American and US Airways in 2013. Doug continues to serve as chairman of American’s board of directors.Doug remains a strong supporter of the people of the airline industry and American is emblematic of the transformation that has occurred in the industry in recent years. The integration of American and US Airways was a success and the airline made unprecedented investments in its team members and product while returning money to shareholders. Doug’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic helped stabilize the industry during an unprecedented decline in demand for air travel.Previously, Doug was Chairman and CEO of US Airways. Under his leadership, the airline achieved record revenue growth, operational performance and profit margins that outpaced most industry peers. Doug served as Chairman, President and CEO of America West Airlines prior to the merger of US Airways and America West in 2005. He became CEO of America West 10 days before Sept. 11, 2001 and led the carrier through the crisis.Doug’s experience prior to joining America West in 1995 includes four years with Northwest Airlines as Vice President, Assistant Treasurer and Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis. From 1986 to 1991, he held several financial management positions with American.Doug received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Wings Club Foundation and the Legend in Leadership Award from the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute, in recognition of his extraordinary career. He is a member of the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust, the SMU Cox School of Business Executive Board, the Medal of Honor Museum Foundation Board of Directors and the International Air Transport Association Board of Governors.Doug earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Albion College in 1984 and an MBA from Vanderbilt University in 1986.
