Much of American Christianity is riddled with the false belief that you come as you are and can stay as you are. Paul disagrees with this when he says, "Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord." The power of salvation in Christ is evidenced in a life free from the bondage of habitual sin and that power is available to those who respond in faith to the grace freely offered from the Lord.

God wants to be with a people who reflect His very nature. So, Psalm 101:5 says, “No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.” A haughty person believes they are better than others in almost every way possible - an attitude our culture encourages all the time, but one which has no place in God’s kingdom. In fact, the higher we think of ourselves, the farther we are from God.

Living in a corrupt culture, it can be easy for Christians to conform to the lifestyle of unbelievers and forget our call to be separate from the world. We tend to justify this behavior by using God’s forgiveness and grace as an excuse to allow behavior God has forbidden. But if we examine Scripture closely, it is clear that our freedom in Christ is a call to something higher. 1 Peter reminds us of this when it calls every believer to, “‘Be Holy for I am Holy,’ says the Lord.”
