We have been waiting two millennia for Jesus to return. Waiting that long has a profound effect on the human heart. It is incredibly easy to fall asleezp during a delayed arrival. Jesus knew this would happen. He prepared his followers for a long wait by telling them exactly what readiness looks like.
Biblical readiness is a highly active state. Jesus illustrated this by describing ten bridesmaids invited to a wedding. As the bridegroom delayed, all ten grew tired and fell asleep. The vital difference was who brought enough oil for a long wait. Five bridesmaids planned for an immediate arrival, but the wise bridesmaids packed extra flasks to prepare for a delayed arrival. Jesus also told the story of servants entrusted with their master's wealth. The ones who actively invested the resources were celebrated upon his return. The servant who passively buried his talent out of fear faced a severe consequence. Readiness only ever happens before an event.
We are invited into that exact same state of spiritual readiness. We step into this posture by faithfully doing today's assignment while watching for tomorrow's king.
