If you've ever studied different cultures in the ancient world, you learn pretty quickly that when it came to the law, there were different standards and consequences depending on who was being tried. The wealthy, connected and elite often got away with things, or were given lenient sentences when compared to the common fold. In ancient Israel, God's Law was different, it was a level playing field and social status was irrelevant. In God's eyes, the Law applies equally to all.
