This week, Jack begins the strange saga of John Murray Spear: Universalist preacher, abolitionist, prison reformer, anti-death-penalty agitator, spiritual medium, and eventual would-be midwife to a “mechanical messiah.”

Before Spear tried to build the “New Motor” (a living machine meant to channel divine electricity and inaugurate a new age) he spent decades pursuing radical reform in 19th-century New England. Jack traces Spear’s working-class childhood, his years in the Universalist movement, his “missions of love” to prisoners and the poor, his work against capital punishment, his involvement with abolitionism and the Underground Railroad, and the mob beating that nearly killed him in Portland.

Then things get weirder. Enter the unfortunately-named Andrew Jackson Davis, Emanuel Swedenborg, the Fox Sisters, mesmeric trances, automatic writing, spirit healing, Benjamin Franklin from beyond the grave, psychometry, sulfur springs, and the “Association of Electricizers.” By the end of Part 1 of our story, Spear has been selected by a committee of dead reformers, scientists, and Founding Fathers to help remake the world through electricity, spirit communication, and one very important machine in a tower in Lynn, Massachusetts.

The White House’s official twitter account went fishing this past week using “Q posting” as bait. They snagged a wild Travis View hook, line, and sinker. While posting about President Trump’s executive orders related to quantum technology, the social media team for the White House and the Pentagon seized the moment to post “Q is for quantum” memes, copy Q drop aesthetics, and parody QAnon slogans. We discuss this new era of government communications, in which trolling and QAnon fan service are used to amplify cybersecurity policy for speculative tech.

Once they get a good picture with Travis and throw him back, he moves onto the reemerging conspiracy that Charlie Kirk’s wireless microphone was rigged with explosives and the bizarre evidence some claim proves this theory. Then Liv and Julian discuss the world cup and what offsides means while Jake and Travis listen intently. Finally, Jake brought us a little dessert to top off the episode in the form of a “large animal chonker and their pilled to the gills parent”. Bon appetite.

BING BONG! After an extended absence due to some antibiotics, Liv is back and has brought with her another episode filled with a slurry of emotion. Liv’s latest covers the betting app Kalshi and its competitor, Polymarket. Although illegal in some states, these “prediction market platforms” have had a boom in popularity allowing users to bet on anything imaginable, including but not limited to, political events. With Don Jr as a strategic advisor for both Kalshi and Polymarket, it’s safe to say these morally questionable sites will be with us for the foreseeable future. Jake and Julian join Liv on this adventure and I would bet it doesn’t take too long for the rails to leave entirely with this troublesome trio.

Woods traces how a group of German critical theorists associated with the Frankfurt School were transformed in the right-wing imagination into the secret architects of everything reactionaries hate about modern life, including feminism, multiculturalism, LGBTQ rights, “political correctness,” Critical Race Theory, and “wokeness.”

A.J. documents how paranoia about the Frankfurt School travelled from Lyndon LaRouche’s conspiracist ecosystem, through the Free Congress Foundation and the 1990s panic over political correctness, into the Tea Party, Gamergate, anti-woke politics, and contemporary right-wing movements in the US, UK, and Brazil.
