The room wasn’t meant to feel like home. It was just a cheap temporary rental while he waited for his new apartment to be ready after moving for work.
The old Victorian house had been divided into cramped rentals over the years, and his tiny third-floor room sat directly beneath an attic access panel hanging from the ceiling over the bed. He hated it immediately, though he couldn’t explain why.
For the first week, nothing happened. Then the storms rolled in.
Late at night, he began hearing footsteps crossing slowly through the attic overhead. At first, he convinced himself it was just an old house reacting to heavy weather. But the sounds kept getting worse—and eventually they continued even after the storms had passed.

After losing both his wife and his lifelong best friend within a few years of each other, his father spent nearly every evening alone in the garage they had shared for decades. While house-sitting for family members one summer, a woman agreed to spend the night alone in an old Ohio home with four dogs for company. The attic had been converted into a bedroom, accessible only by a single narrow staircase, and she had stayed there before without any problems.
Then, at exactly 5:16 one morning, every dog in the room suddenly erupted into panic. The two Great Danes ran downstairs barking. The Jack Russell followed. Even the puppy trapped in her kennel started barking frantically toward the stairwell.
At first, she assumed someone had broken into the house. But when the dogs refused to come back upstairs, she heard something else instead: slow, deliberate footsteps climbing toward the attic bedroom one step at a time.
