Episode Thirty S2: Old Bastards, Scottish Accents & a Man Who Used to Be a Drink ft. Stevie Duffy

This week Katy and Rosie are joined by the wonderfully chaotic Stevie Duffy to chat about his debut novel Old Bastards — a gloriously filthy, outrageously funny comedy set in a nursing home where the residents are absolutely feral, the staff are barely holding it together, and nobody is behaving themselves. Think less peaceful twilight years, more booze-soaked chaos with extremely questionable decisions and characters you will fall completely in love with despite everything. We had an absolute blast chatting with Stevie — and yes, the Scottish accent is exactly as good as you’re imagining.

Plus Rosie’s Bit on the Side this week features a man who was, until recently, a margarita. Not a sentient margarita — we want to be very clear on the terminology — just a man with a very unusual origin story and apparently a lot to offer. Katy had questions. Many questions. We should also mention that there may or may not have been an additional presence in the room for this part of the episode. We’re saying nothing further.

This week Katy and Rosie are back with chapters eleven to twenty two of Quicksilver by Callie Hart and things are getting considerably more complicated for Saeris and Kingfisher. We have thoughts. Strong, chaotic, slightly feral thoughts. No spoilers here but the slow burn is doing its job and we are not coping well.

This week Katy and Rosie are joined by the wonderful Elenor Pountain to chat about her debut novel The Ink Beneath, book one of the Shadows of London series. Lucas doesn’t exactly fit the usual profile — a precise, solitary man who has been perfecting the art of control since he was fifteen. Then he meets Jas, a water-loving barista who is light and mischief and quiet strength all at once, and suddenly his very carefully constructed world starts to come apart at the seams. He saved her life. She claimed his thoughts. The line between protector and predator has never been blurrier and we are absolutely not okay about it.

This week Katy and Rosie tackle the question that really matters: which book character would you want as your actual best friend? Not your love interest, not your nemesis, your best friend. The answers were very telling and we stand by all of them.

Then we dive into the first eleven chapters of the BookTok phenomenon that had the romantasy community in an absolute chokehold — *Quicksilver* by Callie Hart, book one of the Fae and Alchemy series. Saeris Fane is a 24-year-old thief hiding secret alchemical powers in an unforgiving desert realm where water is worth more than gold. One stolen gauntlet, one very unwise portal, and suddenly she's bound to Kingfisher — a Fae warrior with a murky past, a terrible attitude, and the kind of face that makes the terrible attitude considerably easier to tolerate. Enemies to lovers. Razor sharp banter. World building that pulls you in headfirst. We are already feral about it.

This week Katy and Rosie are joined by the wonderful Emma Hine to chat about her debut novel The Power of the Wouivre: Fiorenza, a YA historical time travel adventure that will pull you straight into the streets of 13th century Tuscany. A Cornish teen discovers he can slip into the mind of a medieval Sienese nobleman called Guidaloste, just as Guidaloste uncovers a family legacy soaked in betrayal, deadly rivals, and secrets he was never supposed to find. Binding them across the centuries is a mysterious amulet called a wouivre. It is immersive, it is atmospheric, and we had a brilliant chat with Emma about how this book spent over twenty years finding its way into the world.

Plus Rosie’s Bit on the Side this week features a man with a very particular and frankly impressive gift, specifically the ability to produce American style biscuits from his own flesh. He is also, apparently, excellent in bed. Katy had questions.
