  • The Cost of Retrofitting: Building a foundation for accessibility
Inclusion for students with disabilities requires more than just presence in the classroom; it requires a thoughtful design of educational experiences that enhance learning outcomes for all students. This concept parallels the architectural process of constructing a building: both require intentional planning and design to ensure accessibility and functionality. In Dr. Shelley Moore’s Five Moore Minute video, “The Cost of Retrofitting” she highlights the difficulties of modifying existing systems to be inclusive. Retrofitting an educational environment is akin to adding elevators to a building after it has been built, often resulting in costly and insufficient solutions. Instead, we must design inclusivity into our educational frameworks from the outset. In this podcast episode, Shelley talks to Outside Pin, Emily Mostovoy-Luna, about using a building as a metaphor to think about the steps needed to construct inclusion, that is; community engagement, planning, design, materials, building and maintenance. • Inclusion is Not Assimilation: Understanding the Importance of Identity in Educational Settings
The concept of inclusion has evolved significantly in education, moving beyond mere physical presence in classrooms to encompass a deeper understanding of belonging and recognition of identity. In this podcast episode, Dr. Shelley Moore talks with fellow Outside Pin Hina Mahmood about the recent Five Moore Minutes video where Shelley emphasizes that inclusion is not about forcing individuals to conform to a dominant group, but rather about fostering environments where diverse identities can coexist and thrive. This perspective aligns with research that underscores the importance of recognizing and valuing the multifaceted identities of students to promote their academic and social well-being (Civitillo et al., 2021; Preusche & Göbel, 2021; Verhoeven et al., 2018). • People are not Supports: Understanding the difference between people, supports, and strategies
What is Support? In many educational conversations, the term "support" has evolved into a multifaceted concept that is often misused and misunderstood. This is particularly evident in discussions surrounding the role of Educational Assistants (EAs) or paraprofessionals. While many educators, families, and students advocate for increased support through the hiring of EAs, it is essential to clarify that EAs themselves are not the support; rather, they can be supportive agents within the educational framework (Bennett et al., 2021; Gibson et al., 2015). This distinction is crucial for understanding how to effectively address the needs of students in inclusive education settings. To unpack this notion, January 2025's Five Moore Minutes episode targets four key terms: needs, supports, strategies, and resources. In this podcast episode, Shelley has a deeper conversation about the 5MM video with Dr. Leyton Schnellert, a member of her Outside Pin team.  To watch the 5MM episode and access supplemental resources connected to this episode including the episode script, supporting articles and discussion questions, head to the Five Moore Minutes website: https://fivemooreminutes.com/people-are-not-supports/ To access Dr. Shelley Moore's recommended resources bookshelf, check out her Five Moore Minutes affiliate store: https://www.amazon.ca/shop/tweetsomemoore
