18/10/2026 | 27 mins.Abstract Essay | Terry Whalin: 10 Publishing Myths The Truth About Book Publishing, Author Success & Marketing
What if everything you believed about becoming a successful published author was wrong?
What if writing an extraordinary book, securing a traditional publishing contract, and seeing your work displayed in bookstores were still not enough to achieve financial success?
And what if the greatest mistake authors make is believing their publisher will handle everything after the book is written?
Abstract Essay, hosted by Daniel Lucas and presented by Universal Podcast Network, welcomes Terry Whalin, experienced author, publishing industry professional, former literary agent, and acquisitions editor, for a compelling conversation about his book 10 Publishing Myths and the realities of becoming a successful author.
With a publishing career beginning in 1992, Terry has written more than 60 books for traditional publishers across multiple genres, including children's literature, biographies, devotional books, and practical nonfiction.
His extensive experience as an author, acquisitions editor, and literary agent gives him a valuable perspective on how the publishing industry operates and why even experienced writers can struggle to achieve commercial success.
But despite publishing approximately 50 books, Terry experienced a surprising realization that completely changed his approach to writing, publishing, and book promotion.
THE WAKE-UP CALL THAT CHANGED HIS PUBLISHING CAREER
In 2007, Terry attended Mega Book Marketing University in Los Angeles after receiving an invitation from Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.
The event brought together hundreds of writers, publishing professionals, and speakers discussing book marketing and author success.
At the time, Terry had already written approximately 50 books for traditional publishers.
His publishers had provided advances, produced professionally designed books, and distributed them through bookstores.
Yet when Terry examined his royalty statements, he discovered that his books were not generating the additional earnings he had hoped to receive.
Despite his extensive publishing experience, something important was missing.
During the conference, Terry listened to Jack Canfield, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and author of The Success Principles.
One message profoundly influenced his thinking: taking personal responsibility for one's success.
Terry realized that although he had written numerous books, he had done relatively little to actively promote them.
That realization became a turning point in his career.
Rather than depending entirely on traditional publishing companies, he began taking a more active role in building his audience, sharing publishing knowledge, and developing his online presence.
THE POWER OF CONSISTENCY: BUILDING AN AUTHOR PLATFORM
Following his experience at the conference, Terry began blogging regularly about writing, publishing, and the realities of the book industry.
What began as a commitment to consistently sharing useful information developed into an extensive collection of more than 1,800 blog entries, according to his interview.
He describes maintaining a weekly blogging routine over many years, demonstrating how sustained effort can build a substantial body of educational content.
Terry also recalls discovering that his name appeared on a list recognizing notable content producers.
His experience highlights an important lesson for aspiring and established authors: Publishing a book is only one part of an author's professional journey.
Building awareness, developing relationships with readers, communicating consistently, and understanding book marketing can also play important roles in long-term success.
10 PUBLISHING MYTHS: CHALLENGING WHAT AUTHORS BELIEVE
Through his book 10 Publishing Myths, Terry challenges assumptions that can influence how writers approach traditional publishing, book promotion, literary representation, and their responsibilities as authors.
His professional journey raises important questions about the relationship between publishing contracts, book sales, marketing strategies, and long-term author visibility.
The conversation explores why authors should understand the business of publishing rather than focusing exclusively on the creative process.
