On today’s show, we’re chatting with Dr. Kimberly McGlonn, an award-winning social entrepreneur, working at the intersections of social justice and environmentalism. You might know her as the founder & CEO of Grant Blvd, and now Blk Ivy, which is a Philadelphia-based secondhand store that specializes in cultural artifacts celebrating the aesthetics and work of the Civil Rights movement. Her work has been featured by Fast Company, Inc Magazine, Essence, and has been funded by Beyonce’s BeyGood Foundation. In 2022 she was a recipient of the Visa’s “She’s Next in Fashion Award” and the Black Enterprise “Business Disruptor of the Year” award, and ultimately, her goal is to inspire others to see the power of fashion as and for activism. This episode was indeed inspiring – and rich with history! – and Kimberly even gave us a little preview into her latest book. I’ll let her tell you the whole story. On today’s show, we’re chatting with Maureen of Azyr Specs, which is a vintage glasses brand! Maureen fell in love with vintage glasses while she was working on costumes for a movie that was based in 1975, and she saw firsthand the power that glasses had to elevate a character’s whole look. On this episode, she shares her journey trying to make a sustainable difference in the glasses space, sourcing them from all over the world and refining them alongside an optician in NYC for modern-day wear. Sarah started selling vintage in 1998, when she got a job at a busy buy-sell-trade store called Mars Mercantile, which taught her a lot about the business. Eventually she held pop-up sales where she sold her own vintage clothing in her apartment, and then in 2006, she opened Pretty Penny with a student loan. She’s had multiple locations and iterations of the business throughout its almost 19 year history. But what remains consistent is her love of her local community.
