Shekhar Gomes is an highly acclaimed singer and musician in Auckland who is originally from Bangladesh. He was honored by The Pope in 1977 for the sing ‘Shorger Shiri’ which is globally popular till date. Now a retired teacher, he is well travelled and focusses fully on his music and apart from New Zealand, he has performed to packed audiences in Australia, USA and Canada.
In this podcast, he talks about his overall journey with a huge emphasis on the importance of staying true to the art as a musician and his views on Bengali music as a whole and his love for stalwarts like Shamal Mitra and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay. At present, he is gearing up for his upcoming shows in the 2024/25 season in New Zealand, Australia and America as he also prepares for an upcoming album which will focus on Rabindrasangeet. He also talks about his son Swapnil who is a member of the band Yoko-Zuna.
