The Counter Culture Mom Show with Tina Griffin

Kathleen Janson was the life of the party, but it was all a facade - chasing acceptance through alcohol, drugs, and sex. Then a miraculous thing happened, Jesus met her with love and grace, offering her freedom and a whole new life. Today, Kathleen and her husband are the parents of two children adopted through the foster care system. She is the author of The Gift of Desperation: The True Story of God’s Grace Alive in a Life and the president of The One Child, whose mission is to eradicate the foster care system, one foster family at a time. There are 8,000 foster care children in Tennessee, and only 4,000 foster families stepping up. However, if one family from each of the churches in Tennessee said yes to a child, the foster care system would be eradicated. Kathleen is laser-focused on making this happen through educating and equipping the body of Christ.

What happens when a foster family gets a phone call that three siblings need a safe place to stay immediately? What if they don’t have the supplies - like shoes, car seats, or clothing - that they need? Anthony Poteet has been through this process, and he recognized that foster care parents need a strong support system to help provide some integral items to smooth this transition. Therefore, he founded the Foster Families Assistance Network. He is the executive director of this incredible organization, which works hard to provide the items to foster families taking in kids who have been in a state of in-between, bouncing from home to home, in a chaotic world driven by the coldness of a clinical state system. Parents need to bond with these kids immediately after they arrive, not worry about getting supplies.

Dr. John DeGarmo lost his firstborn daughter at birth. It was a devastating moment that fueled the rest of his life - a life devoted to caring for children in the foster care system. John is the director and founder of the Foster Care Institute and the author of 13 books. He and his wife have been foster parents to more than 60 children, providing a loving household for kids who have suffered greatly amid a variety of troubled or toxic homes. John talks about the deep joy it brings by giving foster kids the gift of love and kindness. The end goal of foster care, he says, is not adoption, but reunification. However, foster care can lead to adoption in some cases, as it did for himself and his wife three times over! Between mental health problems among youth and the many kids who are struggling in horrific home environments, the next mission field for Christians may be as close as the kids next door.
