SLP 612: Finding Strength Through Adversity: Tilly Cason on Resilience, Rugby & Self Love
07/09/2026 | 1h 1 mins.In this inspiring episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim Morrison chats with 19 year old rugby player Tilly Cason about resilience, identity and finding strength through adversity. Tilly shares her journey from discovering rugby at age 10 to playing for the Brisbane Broncos, including her transition from rugby union to league and the challenges of multiple ACL injuries and reconstructive surgeries. Together, Kim and Tilly explore the physical and mental demands of being a young female athlete, the importance of authenticity on social media, and how staying connected to the joy and freedom that first inspired you can help keep your passion alive through difficult times.
Tilly also opens up about the people who have helped shape her journey, including her parents, teammates, coaches and mentors, and the importance of having a strong support system without allowing pressure to take away the enjoyment of sport. This is a beautiful conversation about courage, perspective, gratitude and the power of believing that even the toughest moments are temporary.
About Tilly
At just 19 years old, Tilly has already experienced both the rewards of elite sport and the challenges that come with overcoming significant setbacks. A talented athlete from a young age, she began competing in sport at seven, excelling in track and field before finding her passion for rugby. Inspired by watching her brother play Rugby Union and the female athletes competing alongside him, Tilly began playing rugby with the boys at primary school when she was 11. Her talent quickly led to selection in the Queensland Academy of Sport Rugby Sevens program, where she continued to thrive.
At 16, Tilly transitioned to Rugby League and, after an impressive first season at club level, signed with the Brisbane Broncos. Soon after, she joined the Falcons Pathways Program, where she suffered her first major setback: an ACL rupture requiring reconstructive surgery.
After 14 months of rehabilitation, Tilly returned to the field only to re rupture the same ACL and tear her meniscus just eight minutes into her second game back. Another surgery and months of recovery followed, before a failed meniscus repair led to yet another setback. Today, she continues her recovery following further meniscus surgery.
Despite these challenges, Tilly’s story is not defined by injury but by resilience. Through every setback, she has relied on a positive mindset, self love, physical and mental strength, grit and determination. Her journey has given her a deep appreciation for holistic health, healing and personal growth, and she is passionate about sharing her story to inspire others to keep moving forward, no matter what obstacles they face.
Her definition of Self Love is: Be proud of who you are.
Her favourite quote/final message is: Create a life that you want to live. Just do what makes you happy.

Quotes:
I desired to be a part of such a cool sport, empowering sport that women weren’t really known for.
It was just something that was inside of me, just waiting to be found.
I wanted to build a pathway and connect with the younger girls to build that pathway for them.
It is just amazing that they are caring for us at the same time and putting their time in us to allow our female bodies to work to the best of its ability.
It is finding out what you truly love and what makes you happy.
For me, my way to be happy and feel good about myself, no matter what I am doing, is going for a walk and getting that sunlight.
Finding out what you love is a massive thing.
Once you find out what you love, you stick to that because you know that will make you happy and make you feel a certain way.
I want to create a realistic and authentic audience.
I am so unbelievably grateful for my surgeries, I am the young woman who I am today, which is bringing out my confidence and resilience in myself to be self independent.
I love being myself. I love being in my own body. I love the creativity. I love communicating. I love expressing who I am and my emotions.
Whatever your niche is, jump on your niche and be proud of it and stick to it.
I have the confidence in myself that I know I will bounce back and I know I will fight no matter what happens.
I am just going to keep going until I make it, whatever comes in the way, you just have build that confidence in yourself.
If you have that, then you are honestly unstoppable.
It isn’t weak to speak, and you should be opening up how your emotions are.
It is okay to tell someone how you are feeling and it is so important to reach out and express.
It is just a little hiccup along the way that has built me into a bigger and stronger woman I am.
If you are ever in doubt, or had a tough game, take yourself back to how you played or joined that first sport for the first time. And remember the fun you had playing it.
It is fun. It should be fun. You should be enjoying it.
Create the life that you want to live, because it is your life. You are the main character, you are the narrative.
Be yourself. Love yourself.

Many thanks to Wes and Charlotte Carr – https://wesleydeanmusic.com/- In this week’s Quicky of the Self Love Podcast, Kim explores what holistic living really means and why it’s not about perfection, restriction or completely changing your life. Kim shares how true wellbeing comes from nurturing the whole self: mind, body, emotions, spirit, relationships and environment, while returning to the simple foundations that support us. She introduces her concept of “micro-moments of mindfulness”, sharing simple rituals and practices that can be woven into everyday life, from morning sunshine and deep breathing to evening magnesium, essential oils and creating space to slow down. Most importantly, Kim encourages us to become more aware of the things that nourish or deplete us and to pause and ask the powerful question: “What does my whole self need right now?”

Quotes:
Living a holistic life isn’t just about being perfect or perfection.
What it means to me is remembering that every part of you matters. Your mind, body, emotions, spirit, relationships, and your environment.
A holistic life simply means nurturing yourself in ways that honour the whole of who you are.
I call them triple M’s, micro moments of mindfulness.
It is not that you need more hours in the day. I think it is that you need more moments of presence within the hours you already have.
It is about weaving wellbeing into the life you are already living in those micro moments.
Self love is not having another task or another thing on the to do list. It is about the way you choose to move throughout your day.
Let’s be mindful that holistic health and wellbeing is all areas of life, because when you nurture the whole of who you are, you don’t just survive. You truly thrive.

MUSIC INTRO & OUTRO
Many thanks to Wes and Charlotte Carr – https://wesleydeanmusic.com/ - In this episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim Morrison sits down with Harmony Rutledge, CEO of Anna’s Wild Yam Cream, for a deeply inspiring conversation about women’s health, natural living, business and self-love. Harmony shares her unique upbringing within the Hare Krishna community and how her father’s work in organic sprouts and health food shaped her lifelong connection to natural health, conscious living and sustainability. She also opens up about taking over the 30 year old Anna’s brand in 2020, right in the middle of COVID, and the extraordinary challenges that followed. Together, Kim and Harmony explore the philosophy behind Anna’s, the role of wild yam and chaste tree, and why supporting women’s wellbeing requires looking beyond quick fixes to consider the whole person, including lifestyle, nourishment, mindset and self-care.
Harmony and Kim also explore what self-love really means and how small daily rituals can become powerful acts of kindness towards ourselves. The conversation touches on hormonal changes, menopause, natural approaches to women’s health, the importance of community and leading by example, as well as Anna’s upcoming Bloom Through Every Stage event in Melbourne on October 18th. To finish, Harmony shares some powerful words of wisdom about resilience, failure and continuing forward with confidence. A beautiful reminder that we can keep moving, growing and blooming through every stage of life.
About Harmony
Harmony Rutledge is the CEO of ANNA’S. With over 30 years immersed in the natural health
industry, she took over ANNA’S in 2020 with a vision to make ANNA’S a globally recognised
women’s wellness brand. Passionate about women’s health and holistic wellbeing, Harmony
leads a dynamic all-female team dedicated to supporting women through every stage of life
with trusted products, education and community.
Harmony was raised in the Hare Krishna community, which shaped her values around
compassion, conscious living and doing business with heart. A lifelong vegetarian, Harmony
has always embraced a natural approach to health. Natural medicine, homeopathy, nourishing food, movement and mindfulness have shaped both her personal life and her approach to leadership. Yoga, Pilates, meditation and time in nature continue to be an important part of her everyday life.
As a mother of two, Harmony chose home births for both of her children and understands
firsthand the many seasons of a woman’s health journey. She believes in caring for the whole
person and leading with compassion, curiosity and kindness.
In 2023, ANNA’S Wild Yam Cream was on pre-order for nine months after demand skyrocketed, with women from around the world willing to wait for it to come back in stock.
ANNA’S has now supported more than one million women and is trusted in over 55 countries.
Her definition of Self Love is: Choosing to treat ourselves with the same kindness and compassion that you give to everyone else. Listening to your body, honouring your needs, trusting your intuition, without guilt. And not being perfect. Putting yourself first when you need to, that is not selfish. If we don’t do that, we can’t show up for the ones that need us and ultimately that is also very important.
Her favourite quote is from: Mahatma Gandhi “Be the change you wish to see in the world”
Harmony’s second quote “She was unstoppable, not because she didn’t have failures or doubts, but because she continued on despite them”.

Quotes:
I had an incredible, alternative upbringing and one that I am so incredibly grateful for.
I was very fortunate to have an incredible upbringing with family, organics and with natural lifestyle and listening to the body.
What can we change and what can we control in our environment and doing the bits that we can do to make that difference.
I think it is just really a matter of focussing on what we can do and making those small little steps but just making that part of our lifestyle.
I really live and breathe what I aspire to do, and that is right for me.
Lead by example, do the things that feel right for you and try not to come from that place of judgement.
I think there is that big disconnect from the food we are eating.
We don’t listen enough to our bodies.
Let’s listen to these messages, instead of ignoring them or pushing them aside.
Be grateful and make some changes so you really are flourishing and blooming into the best version of yourself.
Community and that connection is so important to me.
My mission and my vision really when I took on the brand in 2020 was to make Anna’s available to more women all over the world, which we have done.
I think that is how our incredible brand has sustained 30 years is because of that ripple effect. It is that one woman’s experience and another woman’s experience and the sharing and the connection and the communication that I think is so incredibly beautiful and something that I am so grateful for.
Do your research and find what works best for you.
It is an incredibly gentle, natural product that works in harmony with your body.
It is so important to understand our bodies.
I think it is so important love and nurture this incredible body we have. It is an honour to age.
It is that reset, acknowledgement to the body, the gratitude, the love and thank you for the day and now it is time to just go into that rest.
Be grateful for our beautiful bodies.

Many thanks to Wes and Charlotte Carr – https://wesleydeanmusic.com/ - In this uplifting Quicky of the Self Love Podcast, Kim explores why so many of us lose touch with joy and playfulness as we move into adulthood and become focused on responsibilities, productivity and getting things done. She shares why joy is not a luxury but an important part of our physical and emotional wellbeing, and offers simple, practical ways to invite more joy into everyday life. From giving yourself permission to play and reconnecting with your senses through uplifting aromatherapy, to practising gratitude, revisiting joyful memories and spending time with children, animals and nature. Most importantly, Kim reminds us that joy isn’t something we have to earn or wait for; it can be found in the ordinary moments of everyday life.

Quotes:
Joy isn’t a luxury. It is a biological necessity.
Somewhere along the way, life just became serious.
When we experience genuine joy and playfulness, our brains release dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins.
Perhaps you haven’t lost your joy at all. Perhaps you just simply forgotten to invite it in.
Give yourself permission to play without earning it.
Joy lives in this moment right here, right now.
Joy cannot flourish in a body that is constantly believing it is under threat or not safe.
Joy is not found at the finish line. It is found in this moment.
A joyful life isn’t built from extraordinary moments. It is really built from ordinary moments that we allow ourselves to fully experience.
What would make the younger version of me smile today, and go and do exactly that?

MUSIC INTRO & OUTRO
Many thanks to Wes and Charlotte Carr – https://wesleydeanmusic.com/ - In this beautiful episode of Self Love Podcast, Kim is joined by broadcaster, author and storyteller Sheridan Stewart to explore her deeply personal journey to self-love and self-worth in midlife. Sheridan opens up about moving from a life and career largely defined by what she did and achieved, to discovering who she is beyond her career. She shares her experiences of burnout and the emotional impact of broadcasting through incredibly challenging times, including Black Summer and COVID, and the lessons she learned about boundaries, knowing when to press pause and giving herself permission to choose a life centred around meaning, connection and contentment.
Sheridan also shares the story behind her book I Am Enough and the 90-day challenge that grew from her own journey of reflection and change. Together, Kim and Sheridan explore why knowing we are enough and feeling enough can be two very different things, and how small, intentional actions can help us create more joy, self-compassion and contentment.
This is a powerful conversation about recognising that it is never too late to change direction, redefine success and rediscover yourself. Sheridan encourages us to stop waiting for life to change before taking action and instead begin making small choices that help create the way we want to feel. A heartfelt reminder that self-love isn’t about becoming someone different, it is about coming home to who you already are and knowing, truly, I am enough.
About Sheridan:
Sheridan Stewart is an author, broadcaster and speaker who, for more than 3o years, has been telling stories that invite us to feel a little more hopeful, a little more connected, and a little more at home in our own lives.
With warmth, curiosity and humour, Sheridan creates conversations and stories that help people feel seen, think differently, laugh often, and reconnect with what matters most.
Before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in 2014, Sheridan was a popular Triple M presenter, music journalist and comedy host/producer. Today she can be heard on ABC Radio Queensland (Sunshine Coast), exploring the ideas, issues and everyday moments that shape our lives and strengthen our sense of community. Away from the microphone, you’ll usually find her writing, swimming, or dreaming up her next creative project.
Sheridan’s first non-fiction book, I Am Enough: A 90-Day Challenge to Find Contentment, was published in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the US in 2023. Her fiction has also appeared in the Chicago Quarterly Review.
Inspired by her own journey from burnout to contentment, Sheridan created The Joy Club, where she helps people cultivate more joy, purpose and contentment through practical, encouraging online programs, including 21% More Joy in 21 Days, Make Your Dreams Real… in a Way That Actually Works!, and the I Am Enough: A 90-Day Challenge Program. Through each program, she invites people to take small, intentional steps towards a life of greater joy, purpose and contentment.
Her definition of Self Love is: The ability to press pause and know what is enough.
Her favourite quote is from: Danielle LaPorte “What will I do to feel the way I want to feel?”

Quotes:
I am a midlife woman who has rediscovered what self-love means.
We have all this life experience. We lived, we have suffered, we have had joy, we have had loss.
We still have enough time to make a difference in the world.
What I have learned about myself is that drive, coupled with the wrong circumstances, can go into overdrive, and can lead to burnout.
We can now just press pause and learn to love ourselves a little bit more.
There is time, and this thing about having to get it all done by Tuesday, last Tuesday, eventually will catch up with you.
There is always the chance to pick up the threads and go, what does success look like to me now?
It will look different at different ages and different stages of life.
Everybody, even the most introvert of us need love, we need connection.
I can really value people who are different to me.
I realised what had gone missing in all of this intensely, meaningful, purposeful, ambition, driven life, the fun had gone missing.
Being able to nurture other people, to hold space for other people, is such a valuable skill.
Every word I said would impact someone in some way.
The ability to press pause and know what is enough.
I am enough. I have enough. I do enough.
That was a game changing moment for me.
I often believe the keys to what we need to hear are in our complaints.
It was about pressing pause long enough to see what emerges when we pause a behaviour.
Where we get our meaning and sense of purpose is challenging ourselves.
Balance that with joy. Balance that with bringing something in that nourishes you, nurtures you, or brings you joy.
When you pause a behaviour, particularly anything that is self-soothing, what emerges is fascinating.
We rarely get through a challenge without slipping up.
I am insisting on living my best life.
It is not too late. Not too old. Pick a day and make it count.
