The Graduate Dentist Podcast

One of my favourite things about this podcast has always been how it brings people together. Never would I have imagined it ever reach beyond our humble shores of Australia, and so it’s been incredibly special to connect with dentists from all corners of the world.Some of these connections, now friendships, being the wonderful Dr Christelle Kee, Dr Yanbo Yang, and Dr Chow Pang, who practise in the UK and have collectively built a dental community known as The Yum Cha Dentists where they host study clubs over dinners to bring together clinicians of similar backgrounds and experiences.This episode is all about building community, finding your tribe, and surrounding yourself with those who both inspire and challenge you to grow. Because we all know dentistry is tough, but it’s far easier and we go far further when it’s done together. We dive deep into what dentistry looks like in the UK, the gruelling job-hunting process, and the realities of working within the NHS.If I’m being honest, this episode was really a little self-serving and an excuse to finally chat with people I’ve followed for years and wholeheartedly fangirled over as I’ve watched them build their community. As early-stage clinicians, mentorship is something we all want, but it can often feel so elusive. We often talk about the influence social media has on us as dentists, but one area we haven't really unpacked before is this idea of building our personal brand. What does it actually mean? What does it look like in practice? And how do we even begin?In this episode, Dr Alex Foo and I dive into the idea of using social media intentionally to build our identity as a dentist - whether we're an associate wanting to connect with patients in a fun and authentic way, or a clinician to help educate and inspire others, or to showcase our work to prospective employers. There are so many different directions we can take it, but the key thing is we just need to start! And oftentimes that can be the greatest mental barrier.We also talk openly about the mental load of dentistry, and the perfectionism, comparison, and pressure that we don't always know how to explain. People often talk about the rural experience being incredibly valuable as a new grad less saturation means less competition between clinics, more exposure to a wider variety of procedures, busy books, and patients who are often more accommodating. But what other factors should we be thinking about? Things like mentorship, support, and social connection all play a big part too.In this episode, we’re joined by one of our beloved Graduate Dentistry community members, Dr Si Thu Min Tun, to dive into his experience working regionally over the past three years and the clinical growth that’s come with it. In particular, we explore his special interest in ortho and how he’s managed to gain exposure to it, what further training has opened his eyes to, and what considerations we should make when taking on ortho cases ourselves.But how do we actually get to these cool cases as new grads — when we’re new to the practice, the patient doesn’t fully trust us yet, and we’re not quite confident in our own abilities? The Graduate Dentist has always been a community for grads, by grads, and it really wouldn’t be where it is today without the people who contribute to it. One of those people, who’s been there since the very beginning, is Dr Adi Sawant.As someone who openly shares his cases and experiences online, contributes actively to our Discord community, and now helps teach dentists across Australia, Adi brings an enthusiasm for dentistry that’s genuinely infectious.In this episode, we dive into his mindset, and as our conversation unfolded, it became really apparent what’s led Adi to where he is today.
