In a profession like dentistry, people don’t always realise just how physically taxing it can be. One of the best pieces of advice I got early in my career was simple: protect yourself - especially while you’re young, fit and healthy, because you never know what might happen.
It’s easy to think we’re young and invincible, but I’ve heard way too many stories - sporting injuries, back spasms, hand and shoulder injuries. I’ve even heard of someone sneezing and putting their back out. And just like that, you could be out of work for months.

With just a phone and a spark of inspiration, the idea that anyone can be a content creator really isn’t all that far-fetched. And that’s exactly what we’re seeing today - from dental student DIMLs and "top 10 lessons” as an experienced clinician, to silly TikTok trends and car debriefs. We now have access to so many different worlds literally in our hands. And it goes to show there is a whole lot more to dentistry than just teeth.

So who better to join me on today’s episode than Dr Peter Nguyen, someone who has been documenting his dental journey since his student days and is one of my personal favourite content creators.

We dive into where this passion first began, how Peter's balanced dentistry with a creative outlet, and how his relationship with content creation has evolved in parallel with his own life. From being a keen bean dental student, to working alongside his parents in their traditional, non-digital practice, assisting his mentor and learning the importance of personal branding, and ultimately landing a job he never imagined was possible.

One of my favourite things about this podcast has always been how it brings people together. Never would I have imagined it ever reach beyond our humble shores of Australia, and so it’s been incredibly special to connect with dentists from all corners of the world.

Some of these connections, now friendships, being the wonderful Dr Christelle Kee, Dr Yanbo Yang, and Dr Chow Pang, who practise in the UK and have collectively built a dental community known as The Yum Cha Dentists where they host study clubs over dinners to bring together clinicians of similar backgrounds and experiences.

This episode is all about building community, finding your tribe, and surrounding yourself with those who both inspire and challenge you to grow. Because we all know dentistry is tough, but it’s far easier and we go far further when it’s done together.

We dive deep into what dentistry looks like in the UK, the gruelling job-hunting process, and the realities of working within the NHS.

As early-stage clinicians, mentorship is something we all want, but it can often feel so elusive. There’s something to be said about what makes a successful mentor-mentee relationship - how it’s formed, what makes it work, and how each person can grow from it.
In this episode, I’m joined by my very own mentor and good friend, Dr Allan Nguyen, for a deep dive into his journey from an uncertain new grad looking to be guided, to now guiding and inspiring the next generation of dentists. How does someone go from not particularly enjoying oral surgery to becoming a highly adept surgical dentist who places implants, tackles full-arch cases, and performs delicate soft-tissue grafting on a daily basis?
We explore the mindset Allan had as a mentee - how landing in the right work environment, being taken under the wing of his mentor, and collaborating with those around him really springboarded his career growth.
