Jason Quinn, founder of Sustainable Engineering Limited, shares insights from his upcoming book on deep energy retrofits in New Zealand and explains why improving existing buildings is critical for creating healthier, more energy-efficient homes.

In the episode, Jason discusses the importance of taking “performance snapshots” to properly assess a building before beginning retrofit work, along with the benefits of prioritising the building fabric before relying on mechanical systems. He highlights a standout retrofit project that reduced energy consumption from 370 kWh/m²/year to just 58 kWh/m²/year, demonstrating what’s possible with the right approach.

Jason also explores the role of mechanical ventilation in improving occupant health and comfort, the advantages of external retrofitting methods, and why practical, high-performance solutions are becoming increasingly important in New Zealand. Supported by the New Zealand Green Building Council and EECA, his book aims to provide designers, architects, and builders with a clear pathway toward achieving the best possible retrofit projects.
