#420: Starting Solids: What Should Baby's First Food Really Be? with Kate Pope
14/07/2026 | 1h 3 mins.If you've ever wondered whether there's a better way to start solids than the 100 foods before one approach, this episode is going to change the way you think about feeding your baby. Dr. Elana and GAPS certified practitioner, Kate Pope, break down why meat stock is baby's most powerful first food.
In this episode, Dr. Elana sits down with Kate Pope, founder of Wild Nutritionist and a certified GAPS practitioner, to walk moms through the GAPS approach to starting solids. You will learn why meat stock is not the same thing as bone broth, what conditions GAPS first foods can help support (including eczema, colic, constipation, food sensitivities, and picky eating), and how to start this approach even if it feels intimidating. Kate also shares how the gut microbiome shapes the foods your child will crave for years, why picky eating is often a gut problem rather than a willpower problem, and how to make healing foods practical for a busy mom life.
Topics Covered In This Episode:
What is meat stock and how is it different from bone broth
How meat stock supports breastfeeding and postpartum recovery
What is the GAPS nutritional protocol and who created it
Conditions the GAPS approach can help: eczema, colic, food sensitivities
How to incorporate healing foods for the whole family
How to introduce fermented foods safely
What to do when baby refuses meat stock
Practical tips for moms just getting started

Kate Pope is a holistic chef, nutritional therapy practitioner, and certified GAPS practitioner (NTP, CGP), and founder of Regenerative Cooking School. Kate is known for helping mothers confidently navigate the introduction of solids the "gut health way" while also addressing the deeper patterns behind common (but not normal) symptoms. Her work supports families in resolving issues such as eczema, allergies and digestive dysfunction by using food as a primary tool for healing.
Her concept and signature courses, Mama Baby Biome and Baby Biome First Foods Plan, center around a mother's healing authority and power while teaching practical skills, shaped by her own lived experience as a mother, chef, dancer and self-healing woman. At the heart of all her teachings is that when a mother, and thus the family, is well-nourished, the health of the world can shift.

How to Know Before the Next Vaccine Visit with Dr. Ari Calhoun
30/06/2026 | 36 mins. For the first time, the CDC vaccine schedule officially reflects that not every child has the same risk and that some vaccines now fall under 'shared decision making' between you and your doctor. Here's how to actually use that.
In this episode, Dr. Elana sits down with Dr. Ari Calhoun, ND to unpack the most significant shift in how the CDC frames childhood vaccination. The updated schedule now includes three categories: vaccines recommended for all children, vaccines for high-risk groups and vaccines based on shared decision making. Dr. Ari and Dr. Elana break down what those categories actually mean at a real doctor's visit, how to figure out your child's individual risk factors, which questions to bring to your pediatrician and what a pre and post vaccine support protocol can look like for families who want to minimize adverse reactions while still gaining the benefit of vaccination.
Whether you are fully on board with the CDC schedule, considering an alternative plan or somewhere in the middle, this episode gives you the language and the framework to make decisions that actually fit your child.

What 'Shared Decision Making' Actually Means at a Doctor's Visit

I realized early on that my dream career was to become a sports dietitian. Growing up a competitive dancer and swimmer, I was always intrigued by the impact eating certain foods before a competition or meet had on my performance. I had a love for science and how nutrition could have either the most beneficial or detrimental impact on both athletic performance and overall health.
My professional experience began after receiving Bachelor of Science degrees in both Dietetics and Exercise Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I went on to complete my dietetic internship at Saint Louis University to earn my title as a Registered Dietitian and a Master of Science Degree in Nutrition & Physical Performance.
Since founding Eleat Sports Nutrition® in June 2014, I have worked with hundreds of high school, college, and professional athletes nationwide in MLB, NFL, and NHL. I published Fuel Your Body: How to Cook and Eat for Peak Performance in 2021, and work as a media spokesperson for several brands across the health and wellness industry. Whether assisting an adult with weight management or educating an athlete on what to eat to improve their performance, I have a passion for helping others achieve their goals and teaching them how to make healthy eating a part of their daily lifestyle.
