Have you ever been scared of hunger, but also wished you had the cues? In this episode, we get into the strange contradiction of wanting to feel hungry enough before eating, while also spending so much time worrying about hunger itself…
We also take a closer look at what happens when we turn sensations into judgements, and why eating doesn’t have to depend on getting those signals “right”. Especially in recovery, hunger can be unpredictable! Sometimes structure is more helpful than waiting to feel ready. You can eat when you’re hungry, when you’re not sure, or even when you still feel a bit full – without needing to work out exactly what your hunger is telling you first.
Topics covered:
The contradiction of wanting and fearing hunger
Trying to achieve the “perfect” amount of hunger
Body-scanning and constantly monitoring hunger
Why hunger can become another thing to control
The difference between a sensation and the judgement attached to it
Fear of fullness and what it can mean in recovery
Eating for reasons beyond hunger
Why hunger and fullness can be unpredictable in recovery
Mental hunger and the role of structure
Practising eating without perfect conditions

This week, we’re joined by Dr Ann Saffi Biasetti to talk about somatic compassion and what it means to build a relationship with your body, both in recovery and beyond.
We get into what happens when you know something intellectually, but still feel completely different about (and differently in) your physical self. Dr Ann also talks through some common themes we see in our work as coaches: grief, the fear of not liking your recovered appearance, some of the ways loved ones can make things harder without meaning to — and why recovery doesn’t have to mean loving the way your body looks.
Topics covered:
What “your body never meant you any harm” really means
The gap between knowing and feeling
Moving away from fighting the body
Fear of not liking your recovered appearance
How somatic work can aid eating disorder recovery
A simple somatic practice for difficult moments
How support can unintentionally reinforce ED fears
Making space for grief in recovery
Beginning to relate to your body differently

Safia continues her recovery story from last week’s episode, this time focusing on the process itself: beginning therapy, challenging food rules, and eventually letting go of exercise.

Topics covered:
Committing to recovery
Challenging food rules
Extreme hunger and learning to trust her body
Letting go of compulsive exercise
Finding meaning beyond food, weight and movement
Learning that recovery doesn’t have to be perfect
The role of accountability in recovery
When periods restart
How recovery ultimately changed everything

In this two-part miniseries, Safia shares the first half of her recovery story, reflecting on her childhood and some of the big life changes that came through university and work. As time went on, her days became increasingly dominated by food, movement and an eating disorder that shapeshifted to preserve itself.
Safia also looks back at the points where she began to realise that the life she was living wasn’t the life she wanted, and talks about how she began to take steps towards reconnecting with what actually mattered to her.
Topics covered:
Safia’s early relationship with food
Body image, movement and dieting
The impact of university and major life changes
Perfectionism and fear of failure
The role of relationships
Recognising that the eating disorder was taking over
Starting therapy and challenging food and movement rules
Reconnecting with values

Starting recovery wasn’t one neat decision for either of us. There were moments where we knew we couldn’t carry on as we were, but that didn’t mean that we felt completely ready to let our EDs go.
So, in this episode, we’re going back to the beginning. We share what was happening in our lives at the time, and the difference between knowing you want to change, and actually being willing to do something about it…
We also discuss how recovery can begin before you feel ready, and how the reasons you start recovering can evolve once you begin to experience a different way of living.
Topics covered:
Our reality check moments
What our first steps looked like
The role of support in getting started
How our motivation changed once we began
What helped us keep going when it felt difficult
Busting the “feeling ready” mirage
